Here we have a 5" gauge Kerr Stuart 'Wren' class, in this case a large Maxitrak 'Pearl'. This is an obviously used loco, and has come to us after sitting for a few years where a little bit of surface rust has set in here and there, but it's generally in pretty good condition, and certainly both mechanically and boiler wise it's a decent example, and quite a big loco on 5".
The boiler is the usual professionally made silver soldered copper one that you get from Maxitrak, and it can be given a fresh 4 year hydraulic and new steam test before it goes so it's ready to play. Mechanically the bottom end has the odd bit of wear and tear showing, but nothing untoward, and it certainly runs freely enough and has plenty of running life left in it yet! By the time you get up to the larger Maxitrak engines like this one, the cast brass rods and other bits and bobs that are prone to wear have all gone, and you have a sturdy and strongly made model.
There is an injector fitted, and crosshead pump with bypass valve and of course the hand pump, in this case in the right hand footplate bunker. Lubrication is mechanical and easy to get at on the side. All in all a big and easy to use loco, ideal for your garden railway or to batt round your club putting in the miles!
